Hi, if you think this topic publisher is a lazybone just awaiting answer but didnot google and wiki stuffs before, then perhaps you can leave and enjoy other topics. However, if you suppose the publisher is a newbie to Archlinux and Kaosx trying his best to make sense of what the arch/kaos-wiki says but with a not-so-good brain (somewhat stupid in IT) that finally led his efforts to be in vain, then you are welcome to come and are begged to do him a favor.
Ok, now the problem:
1. I installed KAOS 3 days ago by following the KAOSX official guides, successfully.
2. I made the sudo pacman -S virtualbox successfully, 1 day ago.
Soon after the vb machine installation, I executed '# gpasswd -a USERNAME vboxusers', successfully.
3. I configured the settings to run WindowXP in the virtualbox, just as what I did in my previous running systems like ubuntu and its extended versions(mint), pcbsd, etc.
4. When I press start to run the vb machine, the Error MessageBox poped up with its title "Kernel driver not installed (rc=1908)" . A simple google of the title led me to the Archlinux Forum. Following guidances there I made sure that:
a) my system is updated.
b) the gcc, linux-headers are installed.
c) This may be the right place for solving my problem: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VirtualBox
But, over 5 times reading through the article and turns of trials in my XTerm, I discovered these things:
a) the vboxdrv file exists in my /etc/conf.d/ folder, but not in the /etc/init.d/ folder. My system has no path of /etc/init.d/, the "init.d" folder does not exist.
b) I tried to type the '/etc/conf.d/vboxdrv setup' in the XTerm then, and it works. But when starting the vb machine, the Error MessageBox jumped out again.
c) I tried to simply 'modprobe vboxdrv', but it returns 'FATAL: Module vboxdrv not found'.
d) Eventually, I tried to check the DKMS.
i) Firstly, I tried # systemctl enable dkms , and it returns ''Failed to execute operation: No such file or directory". So I knew I could not use the 'dkms install' command, and I should try install the dkms service.
ii) I viewed through some articles in the arch forum and reached no conclusion of how to install dkms service. And, should I follow the aforementioned wiki guide
Hosts running an official kernel
If you are using the linux kernel, make sure the virtualbox-host-modules package is still installed. The latter has been installed when you installed the virtualbox package.
If you are using the LTS version of the kernel (linux-lts), you need to install the virtualbox-host-modules-lts package. virtualbox-host-modules can now be removed if you want.
that, after I tried to install dkms, I should install virtualbox-host-modules? I didnot try that because KAOS is the best ever opensource system running smoothly on my computer (Thinkpad SL purchased 5 years ago); comparing to BSD series that drive the disk crazy enough to make big noise, KAOS runs quietly even when flash video plays. Now after overnights' tweaking, I just got tiresome and wish to know how to address the vb machine problem professionally by not destroying the elegance and effectiveness of this awesome system. Could any professional identify the problem immediately?
Thanks in advance.
