Just looked at the KaOS live iso, and would like to install it on the sda6 partition.
I'm a 12 year Gentoo & KDE testing user, and look at many many distros, and for me it's absolutely necessary to install each distro's Grub to its own root partition, and use my main Gentoo grub2 as the controlling bootloader. I keep 6-7 distros current at any given time, and would really love to give KaOS a thorough long-term trial install (replacing my current openMandriva on sda6, which is proving less than ready).
I read a KaOS ZNET review and the guy says: Also note that there is nothing here about the bootloader installation. Sigh. Time to get back on my soapbox — why not get all the information necessary while you've got me on the line answering questions, rather than asking most of the questions, then going off and performing most of the installation, then after some time coming back to ask another question?
Ah, finally, here is the bootloader configuration. The installation process has been running about 10 minutes or so up to this point, and now it finally has another question.
One thing you cannot do here is choose to embed the bootloader in the head of the Linux filesystem. This has been depreciated as dangerous and unreliable for quite some time now, but most Linux installers still support it. It might not be possible here because of their choice to use xfs as the default filesystem. Whatever the reason, it is probably a good thing — even Linux "old hands" like me should really stop using this capability anyway. This apparently means I can't choose to install grub on the same partion where I install KaOS, and it will by default to taking over the MBR, and remove my main Gentoo grub controller on the MBR, which in unacceptable.
Does this only happen if I use the default XFS file system (which I don't want)? Will the option to install on any sdax partion appear if I select ext4 as the KaOS file system? I'm a long time Linux user, and really wonder why KaOS chose XFS for a desktop distro.
Anyway, if KaOS insists on taking over (replacing) the current MBR bootloader, unfortunately that would be a show-stopper for me. Too bad- I'd really like to install KaOS on my hard drive as I'm looking for a top rate kde light distro to backup my main Gentoo intalls.
Please advise if there is a way to get grub onto the KaOS sda6 root partition.
