Download KaOS_Test

First, minimal test ISO is uploaded for the May stable ISO release.

This first ISO is dealing with quite a few changes and bugs found during the trial builds from the last few weeks.
Major delay with starting this test cycle was caused by an UEFI boot breakage (after lots of digging it was caused by one file in newer systemd).
To try and go back to a much more reasonable EFI boot image kdeosiso.img, kms is disabled for all graphics drivers (nvidia firmware caused the huge size increase), testing will be needed if that is a possibility for all hardware.
Also is there a move to a new sound backend, phonon-mpv is used, thus no longer needing vlc (Qt5 based) on this ISO.
The locale page in Calamares has issues since the move to Qt 6.7.0, it is till not showing the correct location on load, so make sure to click the map with your actual location, then the install will use the needed locale settings.

As always, early test ISOs are minimal, very few apps, just a web-browser, file manager, text editor, GUI package manager. The non-free Nvidia drivers are included since they are a big part of what needs testing, especially the move to 550 will need attention from those who have the hardware to test this driver.

Plan is to have Frameworks 6.2.0, KDE Applications 24.05, Plasma 6.0.4 and Linux 6.8.xx on the final ISO.

The ISO is using packages from the build repo, but that repo is not enabled, so if you decide to install, make sure to add the build repo to your pacman.conf.

Debug packages for Calamares are part of all ISOs, run Calamares with gdb if you encounter errors.
provide the installation log, if you encounter any issue at all

You can start Calamares from the Welcome app, or run it with:

sudo calamares -d

The install log will be created in the home directory of the Live user, see ~/installation.log. It is available after the install in the target system in /var/log/installation.log
If run from cli, make sure to pastebin the full output, since no installation.log will be copied then, though that log is more complete.

Known issues:

  • The bottom progress-bar in Calamares reacts to mouse clicks & opens a virtualkeyboard (narrow)

Clean install. Legacy Boot in VMWare Player guest, EXT4, UK locale, US keyboard. Briefly tested Falkon, Konsole, Pacman, kinfocenter, krunner, and the Application Launcher.

Clean install on an older PC. No real issues apart from "error creating screencast" message which is most likely to do with the old Nvidia card.
Also installed it OK to VirtualBox.

    What card exactly & used free or non-free to boot into the ISO? Important to get as much feedback as possible for nvidia cards with the changed kms settings.

      The screencast error has gone after a few reboots, the only errors present are as follows:-

      Qt depends on a UTF-8 locale, but has failed to switch to one.

      I know this Qt error is ongoing but it is a bit offputting for a new user.

      Second minimal ISO is up.
      Issue with Calamares & the locale/map not working correctly is fixed.
      ISO moved to the 6.8 series for the kernel (6.8.9 is included).
      Still used the no kms setting for graphics drivers, so far no issues found/reported with that.
      Bcachefs is removed from Calamares, not ready, completely fails to install with it.
      For the rest, just lots of updates compared to the first minimal ISO.

      First full ISO is up.
      A bit of a delay to get this ISO out due to major updates coming the last few days, that should be on this ISO.
      This included Qt 6.7.1, KDE Apps 24.05 (not released yet, but on this ISO) & Plasma 6.0.5.
      Kernel is also updated, at 6.8.10 now.
      No new issues found on the last minimal ISO, so no changes in that regard were needed.
      If no new issues found then this could be the final ISO for the May release.

      One more full ISO is uploaded, mostly because of quite a few updates (kernel had some security fixes for example). Qt6 frameworks had a few (minor) bugs, those are now fixed, so it seems better to get all that on the stable ISO.
      Plan is to release this tomorrow as the stable May release.
